What is Circular String Art?

Circular string art (sometimes referred to as thread art or yarn mapping) is a geometric design technique where a single continuous thread is wound between nails arranged in a circle. By crossing the circle repeatedly along calculated chords, a detailed image or pattern emerges. Our free string art generator uses an advanced greedy search algorithm to automatically map pixels to nail routes, allowing you to recreate any portrait or logo physically.

How to Make Your Own Circular String Art

Recreating your digital patterns on a physical board is easy and rewarding. Follow these steps to build your custom project:

1. Prepare the Board: Cut a circular piece of plywood (typically 50 cm or 60 cm in diameter). Paint or stain it in your choice of background color (black or white are recommended).
2. Place the Nails: Print the nail map template from the exported PDF guide. Tape it to the board, and tap wire nails (about 1.5 inches long) into each of the numbered markings around the perimeter. Pull away the paper template once all nails are secure.
3. Wind the Thread: Tie a spool of sewing thread or embroidery floss to Nail 0. Follow the step-by-step sequence (e.g. Nail 0 → 142 → 28 → 180...) provided by the generator. Keep the thread taut as you wind it around the head of each nail in order.
4. Secure the Pattern: Once you complete all the thread steps, tie a secure knot at the final nail and add a drop of glue to lock it in place.

Tips for Best Results

For the highest accuracy, follow these guidelines when setting up your generator:

High Contrast: Choose photos with clear features or outline shapes. Use the Image Contrast Boost slider to enhance subtle gradients.
Nail Density: Higher nail density (e.g. 240 or 360 nails) yields much higher resolution and holds finer details, especially for human portraits.
Winding Steps: A typical portrait takes between 1,500 and 3,000 steps to build sufficient depth and shading. Keep thread opacity low for smoother results.
