How Does String Art Work? (The Stringify Algorithm Engine)
Circular string art relies on an optical phenomenon: thousands of overlapping straight lines crossing a circular boundary mimic continuous photographic tone. Traditional raster rendering uses pixels or halftone dots. Stringify's greedy radial search engine replaces dots with continuous thread vectors.
1. Image Luminance Mapping
Your uploaded photo is cropped to a circle and mapped to a 250,000-pixel density grid. Dark pixels indicate areas where high thread chord density is required.
2. Greedy Radial Chord Search
Starting from Nail 0, the algorithm evaluates straight chords to every candidate pin using Bresenham's line algorithm, picking the path covering the darkest pixels.
3. Subtractive Feedback Tuning
Each selected chord subtracts darkness from the memory buffer, simulating the physical thread shading that zone, and forces subsequent steps to balance shadows across the portrait.

Use a 50cm or 60cm diameter circular disc of Baltic Birch Plywood or MDF (12mm–18mm thick). Avoid soft pine or thin 6mm plywood which warps under thread tension.
Nail Pins
Use 1.25" (32mm) wire nails or escutcheon pins with small rounded heads (16 or 17 gauge). Small heads stop thread from slipping off while keeping perimeter clean.
Polyester Thread
100% Polyester sewing thread (size 40 or 50) provides high tensile strength without snapping. A typical 3,000-step piece uses 1,800m to 2,600m of continuous spool.
